Tomcsányi Családi Birtok
“We do not want to make perfect wines. We want to make living wines that truly reflect the terroir — wines that only we, and only here, can create.”
The Tomcsányi Family Estate is located on the western side of Somló Hill, where Árpád Tomcsányi lives and works with his wife, Nóri, and their children. The family’s connection to this place began with Árpád’s father and his desire to acquire land for future generations. Drawn to the higher slopes beneath the forest, the family from Budapest gradually formed a bond with Somló that now feels as though they had always belonged here.
They farm 3.5 hectares with an organic approach and biodynamic mindset. Their vineyards are living gardens, where insects, birds, wildflowers, fruit trees and many other plants coexist in harmony. They closely observe and learn from the needs of each vineyard, always trying to give the vines what they need and to work in rhythm with nature. Alongside sulphur and copper, they use various plant teas in the vineyard and pay close attention to the timing of seasonal work.
They see each vintage as an opportunity to discover something new about the land and its natural processes. For this reason, nothing is used during fermentation that would alter those processes. The wines ferment in barrels and amphorae, then age on lees until bottling. They are made unfiltered, unfined and without added sulphur.
Their labels carry three reminders: the hill, the grape and their fingerprint. Somló’s volcanic, basaltic and sedimentary soils are where the vines send their roots deep underground. The grape represents not only the fruit, but also the wider garden that demands their care and attention. The fingerprint is their own presence in every bottle: their knowledge, time, strength and gratitude, but also muddy boots, bare feet, fatigue, uncertainty, fear and mistakes. The wine is their way of expressing what they believe about the world.
