Ktima Ligas is one of the most important names in Greece’s natural wine movement. Founded in 1985 by Thomas Ligas in Pella, in northern Greece, the estate was born from a desire to reconnect with the region’s agricultural past and to give new life to native Greek grape varieties that had long been overlooked. Today, the domaine is led by his daughter Meli Ligas, who continues this work with a strong focus on permaculture, organic farming and low-intervention winemaking.

Pella is an ancient and historically rich region, once known as the birthplace of Alexander the Great, but its wine identity is still being rediscovered. The vineyards of Ktima Ligas grow on a varied mosaic of soils, including schist, clay, limestone and loamy sand. This diversity gives the wines their layered character: freshness, texture, herbal depth and a distinct mineral line. The estate works with indigenous varieties such as Assyrtiko, Roditis, Kydonitsa, Xinomavro and Limniona, treating each one as a direct expression of place rather than as a fixed style.

In the vineyard, the work is guided by the principles of permaculture. Instead of forcing the vines into a rigid system, the goal is to create a living, balanced environment where biodiversity, soil health and natural resilience can develop over time. Everything begins with careful farming, because for Ktima Ligas the energy of the wine is inseparable from the health of the land.

The cellar follows the same quiet, respectful approach. Grapes are harvested by hand, fermentations happen spontaneously with native yeasts, and sulfur is used minimally or not at all. Skin contact is an important part of the estate’s identity, even for white varieties, bringing texture, grip and aromatic complexity. Depending on the parcel and the wine, ageing may take place in amphorae, old wood or stainless steel, always with the aim of preserving the character of the fruit and the vineyard.

The philosophy is simple but deeply felt: let the land speak. Ktima Ligas wines are expressive, alive and full of personality, combining Mediterranean warmth with brightness and tension. They are rooted in tradition, but never nostalgic; bold, modern and unmistakably Greek, they show how much depth and originality can come from working honestly with native grapes and living soils.
