Gut Oggau
Gut Oggau is one of the most recognisable names in the natural wine world, not only because of its iconic labels, but because of the life and energy behind every bottle. Since 2007, Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe have been working in the village of Oggau, Burgenland, where they restored a 17th-century winery and brought long-abandoned vineyards back to life.
Their vineyards are farmed fully biodynamically, with deep attention to soil health, biodiversity and the rhythm of the land. Oggau lies close to Lake Neusiedl, in a part of Burgenland shaped by warmth, wind, limestone, schist and old vines. This landscape gives the wines both ripeness and freshness: a generous core, lifted by energy, texture and a distinctly mineral line.
Gut Oggau’s cellar work follows the same philosophy as the vineyard. Fermentations are spontaneous, the wines are unfiltered and made with minimal intervention. Rather than forcing a fixed style, Eduard and Stephanie allow each parcel and vintage to show its own character. Their wines can be playful, delicate, wild, serious or profound, but they always feel alive.
Each bottle tells a story through the now-famous fictional family that appears on the labels. The younger generation, such as Atanasius and Theodora, tends to be bright, open and energetic. The “parents” bring more depth and structure, while the older generation, including Mechtild and Bertholdi, shows the quiet power and complexity of old vines. It is a poetic way of organising a range, but also a surprisingly precise one: the personalities on the labels often mirror the personalities in the glass.
What makes Gut Oggau special is this rare combination of imagination and farming discipline. The wines feel artistic, but never decorative; natural, but never careless. They have become icons of Austria’s natural wine movement and appear in some of the world’s most thoughtful restaurants and wine bars. More than anything, they show how a vineyard, when treated as a living place, can speak with its own voice.
