Levente
At the southern foot of the Mátra Mountains, near the village of Abasár, Major Levente cultivates 19 hectares of vines with deep respect for nature, tradition and the volcanic landscape that shapes his wines.
Levente grew up among vineyards, in a family where his parents and grandparents made a few barrels of wine each year for their own table. His connection to winemaking deepened during his high school and university years, and in 2004 he bought his first small plot of land. From there, his vision slowly began to take shape: to make authentic, expressive wines that clearly reflect their volcanic origin. Years of patient experimentation followed, each vintage bringing him closer to a pure, transparent style that lets the terroir speak for itself.
The vineyards lie on the slopes of Sár-hegy, once a side crater of the ancient Mátra stratovolcano. The soils here are remarkably complex: andesite, andesitic tuff, pyroclastic material, brown forest soil, red clay and weathered volcanic debris all appear in the vineyards. Together with southeast- and south-facing terraces, these mineral-rich formations give the wines freshness, structure and a distinct volcanic tension.
In both vineyard and cellar, Levente works with minimal intervention and fully ecological farming. He relies on natural materials, manual labour and patience, always aiming to preserve the natural balance of the vines and soil. Nothing is rushed. His wines are allowed to mature for significantly longer than most producers would choose, often for at least three years, so that each bottle reaches real harmony before release.
This long, calm ageing gives the wines depth, stability and a sense of timelessness. They are alive, distinctive and sincere: clear reflections of the Mátra’s volcanic landscape and of Levente’s quiet dedication to honest, natural winemaking. Since 2018, every one of his wines has been bottled without any added sulfur.
Alongside his work as a winemaker, Levi is also the headmaster of the local primary school in Abasár, a role that reflects the same patience, responsibility and deep connection to his community that shape his wines.
