In the rolling hills of Southern Styria, Maria and Sepp Muster cultivate around 10 hectares of old vines with a quiet, uncompromising commitment to nature. Working biodynamically since 2003, they have built a practice rooted in patience, observation and the belief that wine begins long before the cellar.

Their vineyards are planted on the region’s distinctive Opok soils: pale, chalky marl layered with clay and silt. These soils hold water while also giving the wines tension, mineral depth and a recognisable saltiness. Together with the cool, alpine-influenced climate of Southern Styria, they create wines that combine ripeness with freshness, texture with precision.

Maria and Sepp work with the classic varieties of the region, including Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon, Welschriesling, Gelber Muskateller and Blaufränkisch. The goal is never to make the grapes conform to a predetermined style. Instead, each parcel is allowed to speak in its own way, shaped by soil, vintage, vine age and the quiet rhythm of biodynamic farming.

In the cellar, the same philosophy continues. Fermentations are spontaneous, no additives are used, and the wines are bottled without filtration or fining. Time is an essential part of the work: many wines spend long periods on their lees or in large old wooden casks, slowly finding their balance without being rushed or corrected.

The result is a range of wines that feels both deeply grounded and remarkably free. They are textural, energetic and elegant, often carrying layers of citrus, herbs, stone, smoke and salt. Whether white, orange or red, each wine has a calm intensity that makes it unmistakably Muster.

The labels, created by their late friend and artist Beppo Pliem, are an important part of this world. Their simple, poetic forms reflect the relationship between earth, sky, vine and human work, mirroring Maria and Sepp’s own vision of freedom through farming. These are wines of place, but also wines of attention: patient, soulful and profoundly alive.
